Crate training is one of the most valuable things you can teach your dog. When done correctly, a crate becomes your dog's safe haven — a cozy den they choose to relax in. It also makes housebreaking dramatically faster.
Choosing the Right Crate
Size matters. The crate should be large enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably — but not so large that they can sleep in one corner and eliminate in another. Browse our selection of dog crates and kennels in all sizes to find the perfect fit.
Step-by-Step Introduction
Step 1: Place the crate in a busy room with the door open. Toss treats inside without pushing your dog in. Let them investigate on their own terms.
Step 2: Feed meals near, then inside the crate. Move the food bowl progressively closer and then inside over several days.
Step 3: Close the door briefly while they eat, then open it immediately after. Gradually extend the time.
Step 4: Build duration slowly, with you nearby, gradually increasing to longer periods.
What to Avoid
Never use the crate as punishment. Don't leave a dog in a crate for more than 4 hours at a time. Don't release a puppy while they're whining — wait for a pause in whining first. Most dogs are comfortable with a crate within 1 to 2 weeks when the process is done gradually.
